Using the Social Web to Find Work

How to find work using free online tools and networks.

Using the Social Web

Chris Brogan is perhaps one of the most celebrated and prolific thought leaders in the area of social media, online community building and digital marketing.

Brogan is President of New Media Labs, a new media marketing agency just outside of Boston, Massachusetts. He is a “power blogger” ranked in the top 5 of the Advertising Age Power150, a much sought-after conference speaker, and co-author recognized on the New York Times and Wall Street Journal bestselling lists for his book “Trust Agents: Using the Web to Build Influence, Improve Reputation, and Earn Trust.”

Last December, as the recession began to take deeper bites out of North America’s economy, Brogan realized that many people would lose their jobs. So he decided to leverage his online expertise to help them using the “social web”.

The “social web” takes old-fashioned business networking up a notch. Brogan says that networking online can help like-minded people connect to each other and “perhaps find the job they need to keep themselves afloat in the coming months and year.”

Online tools “permit human contact and thatʼs what drives new business opportunities,” Brogan continues.

Free E-Book:

So he compiled some of the best tips he knew on how to use the internet’s social networking sites and “lightweight communications platforms” to find work. His brief 19-page “e-book”  called “Using the Social Web to Find Work” is offered for free online on his site (you don’t even need to register to access it).

“The goal of this ebook”, Brogan writes, “is to be helpful to people who might be looking for a new job, new business, or just the opportunity to expand their business network for the coming year.”

Brogan’s e-book offers advice on:

  • how to write an effective LinkedIn profile
  • how to build a powerful online network
  • how your blog serves as your resume
  • how to find job postings which only exist online — outside of traditional job boards

I know several marketing professionals in my immediate circle who have lost their jobs due to down-sizing. Many of the ones that remain employed feel slightly “hunted” or admit to low company morale. They often feel unappreciated by their management team which tends to under-value a marketing department’s key contribution to the company’s health and stability.

If you decide to change jobs or are “out there” actively seeking a new opportunity, may this e-book empower you to expand your network online. If you find it helpful, please do pass on this link below to others:

I’ll give the last words to Chris Brogan:

“Instead of hunting for jobs, get started now by building networks ahead of time so that youʼre helping others long before you need help yourself.

Remember that YOU are every bit as capable of finding and building networks as anyone. Donʼt wait for others. Build your own and nurture them. Itʼs a winning strategy no matter what your current circumstances.”

How have you used the social web? Have you found valuable professional contacts or even hired talented employees via these online connections? Please share your thoughts and questions.
